Client Overview
An Australian-based leader in open-channel irrigation automation, this client designs and deploys advanced water control infrastructure across agricultural districts, both locally and internationally. Their systems are used to improve water efficiency in gravity-fed irrigation networks through the use of remotely controlled gates, powered by solar-charged systems and monitored via low-power telemetry.

The Challenge
To enable precise and reliable actuation of water gates across thousands of remote sites, the client required a motion solution that was:
- Capable of delivering high starting torque under load
- Efficient at low voltages, operating from solar-powered DC systems
- Mechanically adapted to suit the client’s own gate drive mechanisms
- Proven in dusty, wet and thermally variable outdoor environments
- Scalable across multiple gate sizes and force requirements
They also required a solution that could be delivered locally, with configuration support and inventory continuity.
Powerbox Solution
Powerbox (M. Rutty & Co) worked closely with the client’s engineering team to specify and supply a range of customised Dunkermotoren brushed DC motor assemblies. Several models were used across the deployment, including the Dunkermotoren GR80, selected for its torque performance and reliability in long-life field installations.

Each motor assembly was tailored to application requirements and included:
- A custom gearbox, locally engineered to match gate load characteristics and expected duty cycles
- A locally fitted IP67-rated encoder, providing accurate position feedback in harsh outdoor conditions
- Application-specific shaft and mounting interfaces, ensuring direct integration with the client’s actuator housings
- Pre-wired and fully tested assemblies, delivered with QA documentation to support field rollout

Project Outcomes
- Reliable gate actuation at scale, with consistent torque delivery under varying load and environmental conditions
- Reduced current draw, improving system autonomy and extending operational time between solar charging cycles
- Accurate position monitoring, enabling closed-loop control and efficient water distribution
- Streamlined logistics, with Powerbox providing stocked variants and responsive support throughout deployment
