Overview:

Sydney's bustling road network features strategically positioned automated moveable median strips, facilitating the seamless redirection of traffic flow based on varying conditions. These median strips, located at critical junctures such as the Sydney Harbour Bridge approaches, General Holmes Drive, and Military Road, play a critical role in optimising traffic management. Traditional methods of adjustment of these median strips amidst heavy traffic during peak hour posed significant safety risks and operational inefficiencies, necessitating a modernised approach.

Challenge

The reliance on either manual manipulation or early hydraulic-powered systems for automatic median strip adjustment presented substantial challenges. Safety concerns loomed large, particularly given the potential risks associated with hydraulic failures, such as fluid leaks onto road surfaces in major thoroughfares. Transport for NSW recognised the need to overhaul this outdated process to enhance both safety and traffic flow efficiency

Solution

Powerbox collaborated closely with Transport for NSW to provide an electric motor solution based around the Dunkermotoren BG95 dPro series, a programmable brushless DC motor with integrated gearbox and brake system. The motor assembly, which includes an additional IP-rated housing, drives a chain mechanism to seamlessly maneuver the median strips based on traffic flow requirements. The motor's high positional accuracy, coupled with integrated encoders and remote-control capabilities via CANopen, ensured precise and reliable operation, even in the most demanding conditions.
