Inrush Current Limiters

When capacitive loads such as LED drivers and switched-mode power supplies are switched on, they draw a surge of current far exceeding their normal operating level. Left unmanaged, this inrush can trip circuit breakers, stress switchgear, and shorten equipment life.

Powerbox supplies the Camtec ESB series, a range of inrush current limiters that solve this problem using an active timed limiting circuit, not a passive NTC thermistor, delivering consistent, predictable protection on every switching event regardless of prior thermal state. At power-on, the limiter restricts inrush for a defined period before electronically bypassing to connect the load directly to the AC supply. If a power interruption exceeds a defined threshold, the unit automatically re-arms, ensuring protection is maintained through outages and recovery events.

Beyond equipment protection, correctly specified inrush current limiters allow significantly more capacitive load to be connected to an existing circuit breaker, reducing the number of AC branch lines, enabling smaller MCB ratings, and lowering cable cross-section requirements, with meaningful savings in installation cost and copper.

The Camtec ESB range covers single-phase 115/230Vac and three-phase 400/500Vac applications from 3.6kW through to 46kW, with models suited to commercial lighting infrastructure, traffic control systems, street lighting, tunnels, parking facilities, and heavy industrial installations. All models are available in compact DIN rail format.
