Inrush Current Limiters
An inrush current limiter protects equipment and infrastructure from the surge of current that capacitive loads draw at switch-on. LED drivers, switched-mode power supplies, and other capacitive loads can pull current far above their normal operating level the instant power is applied. Left unmanaged, this inrush can trip circuit breakers, stress switchgear contacts, and shorten the working life of connected equipment.
Powerbox supplies the Camtec ESB series, a range of inrush current limiters built around an active timed limiting circuit rather than a passive NTC thermistor. This design delivers consistent, predictable protection on every switching event, regardless of how recently the unit last operated or how hot it is. At power-on, the ESB series restricts inrush for a defined period, then electronically bypasses to connect the load directly to the AC supply. If a power interruption exceeds a defined threshold, the unit automatically re-arms, so protection is maintained through outages and recovery.
Beyond protecting equipment, a correctly specified inrush current limiter allows significantly more capacitive load to be connected to an existing circuit breaker. That means fewer AC branch lines, smaller MCB ratings, and reduced cable cross-section, with real savings in installation cost and copper.
The Camtec ESB range covers single-phase 115/230Vac and three-phase 400/500Vac applications from 3.6kW through to 46kW, in a compact DIN rail format suited to commercial lighting infrastructure, traffic control systems, street lighting, tunnels, parking facilities, and heavy industrial installations.
