Background
Sydney Trains’ station networks operate extensive IP-based CCTV systems, with each camera and network device dependent on a stable 48Vdc supply. Given the security-critical nature of these feeds, the power system must deliver reliable backup in the event of a mains failure and integrate seamlessly with existing station infrastructure. Indra, as the technology integrator, required a complete DC power and battery solution that could provide high energy density, remote management, and compatibility with the station’s deployed DC power platforms.
Challenge
The deployment spanned more than 50 stations across the Sydney Trains network, with many sites co-located alongside other critical rail systems. Equipment is often installed in communications rooms and enclosures subject to wide ambient temperature ranges, including extreme summer conditions.
Stations in Sydney’s western suburbs, such as Penrith, have recorded internal enclosure temperatures exceeding 50°C during peak summer months. The solution needed to provide sufficient 48Vdc backup capacity for PoE-powered cameras within tight space constraints, integrate with multiple DC power system types, allow remote monitoring via network protocols, and meet the reliability expectations of a live rail environment.
Solution
Powerbox supplied both the DC power systems and the Polarium 50Ah NMC lithium-ion battery modules. The DC systems, based on Enatel and Eltek platforms, were configured and integrated locally by Powerbox to meet site-specific requirements. The Polarium NMC batteries offered a compact footprint with high usable energy density, enabling extended backup durations without the need for large or multiple battery cabinets. Each battery’s integrated Battery Management System (BMS) provided:
- Remote monitoring of voltage, state of charge, and alarms.
- Seamless integration with both Enatel and Eltek controllers for centralised status reporting.
- Support for standard communications protocols for compatibility with Indra’s supervisory systems.
Outcome
The network-wide installation has delivered:
- Reliable 48Vdc backup to maintain PoE to all connected CCTV devices during outages.
- Significant space savings in existing racks and enclosures.
- High resilience to temperature variations, ensuring consistent performance in challenging installation environments, including extreme heat events.
- Improved visibility of battery and DC system health across the network, enabling predictive maintenance.
- Reduced total cost of ownership through the long service life of NMC technology and lower maintenance requirements compared to legacy battery types.
