The Dunkermotoren E38R is a spring-force power-off brake that holds a motor axis the instant supply voltage is removed, so vertical loads, positioning stages and gravity-loaded axes stay put through an emergency stop or power failure. Because the holding force comes from a spring rather than a permanent magnet, torque stays predictable as the motor heats up or the duty cycle changes, and there's no polarity to get wrong on connection.

The E38 brake integrates directly into Dunkermotoren's BG45XI motor housing (BG45x15 and BG45x30 variants) at IP65, with engagement controlled by the motor's own software rather than a separate switching circuit. Where a standalone mount is preferred, it can also be fitted openly or under a cover, connecting via 300mm grey leads (UL style 1569 AWG 24) to a 24Vdc supply.

Its combination of fast engagement and compact Ø38mm body suits small servo and stepper axes where a vertical load, clamp or positioning stage must not drift the moment power is lost, typical in general motion control, factory automation and small robotic axes.

It's part of Dunkermotoren's full power-off brake series, which spans the permanent-magnet E22R and E100R through to the higher-torque spring-force E90R, E310R and E600R for larger axes, plus the power-on E46A to E605A range for applications requiring a normally-braked default state.

The E38R is rated at 0.2Nm nominal torque on a 24Vdc supply. It sits second from the bottom of the Dunkermotoren power-off series: the E22R at 0.1Nm, E38R at 0.2Nm, E90R schwach at 0.5Nm, E90R at 1Nm, E100R at 1.5Nm, E310R at 3.3Nm and E600R at 7Nm.
A power-off brake holds the load when supply voltage is removed and releases when it is applied, so the axis is held automatically on power loss, emergency stop or shutdown. Specify one wherever a vertical axis, gravity load or positioning stage must not drift while the drive is de-energised — it is a holding brake, not a service brake for decelerating a moving load.
The E38R uses spring force, a design Dunkermotoren describes as particularly robust and insensitive to temperature and load changes, so holding torque stays predictable as the drive heats up or the duty cycle varies. It is also not polarity-sensitive. The permanent-magnet E22R and E100R are more compact for their rating but require correct polarity on connection. For most industrial duty cycling the spring-force design is the safer specification.
The E38R has a 5ms activation time and a 20ms deactivation time — the fastest engagement of any spring-force brake in the series, and second only to the E100R at 6ms across the whole power-off range. That matters where an axis must be caught immediately on an emergency stop.
The E38R runs on 24Vdc, drawing 0.20A at 5W nominal input power in the run-in condition.
The E38R measures 38mm in diameter by 23mm long and weighs 0.12kg — the shortest body of the spring-force brakes. It is supplied with 300mm grey leads in UL style 1569 AWG 24.
The brake itself is IP20 as supplied. Brakes can be mounted to the motor openly or with covers in protection class up to IP65, and in combination with brushless motors they can be integrated into the motor profile housing at IP65 — so the achievable rating depends on the mounting arrangement rather than on the brake alone.
