The Dunkermotoren E46A is a 24 Vdc power-on brake rated at 0.3 Nm nominal torque: the entry point of the power-on series. A power-on brake applies torque when it is energised and releases when supply is removed: the opposite of the power-off brakes in the Dunkermotoren range. It is specified where braking is a commanded function rather than a fail-safe one, since the axis is free when the machine is unpowered.

The E46A draws 0.26 A at 6.3 W nominal input power, engaging in 8 ms and releasing in 5 ms. That 5 ms release is the fastest of any brake on this page, which suits it to short-cycle indexing work where the time spent freeing the axis limits throughput. It measures 46 mm in diameter by 25.5 mm long and weighs 0.1 kg, the lightest brake in the range, and runs with low noise. Protection class is IP 20 as supplied. Brakes can be mounted to the motor openly or with covers in protection class up to IP65, and in combination with brushless motors they can be integrated into the motor profile housing at IP65. Connection is by 500 mm grey AWG 24 leads.

Power-on brakes are supplied on request. All rated values apply in the run-in condition.

Dunkermotoren E46A power-on electromagnetic motor brake with black housing and protruding shaft
Features
  • Power-on operation applies braking torque only when energised: the axis runs free when the machine is unpowered, for commanded rather than fail-safe braking
  • 0.3 Nm nominal braking, the entry point of the power-on range, for light commanded axes
  • Engages in 8 ms and releases in 5 ms: the fastest release of any brake in the Dunkermotoren range, freeing the axis almost instantly
  • The lightest power-on brake at 0.1 kg (Ø46 mm, 25.5 mm long), minimal added mass on the axis
  • Low-noise operation for quiet installations
  • IP 20 as supplied, or up to IP 65 with covers
  • 500 mm AWG 24 grey flying leads for direct wiring

FAQs
The E46A applies 0.3 Nm nominal torque on a 24 Vdc supply, the entry point of the power-on series: E46A at 0.3 Nm, E50A at 0.4 Nm, E105A at 1.7 Nm, E300A at 2.5 Nm and E605A at 4.5 Nm. Dunkermotoren does not publish a torque range over temperature for the E46A, so where a guaranteed band matters the E50A at 0.25–0.60 Nm is the closer specification.
A power-on brake applies torque when it is energised and releases when supply is removed. A power-off brake does the reverse, it holds when de-energised, so the axis is caught automatically on power loss or emergency stop. Choose a power-on brake where braking is a commanded step in the cycle; choose a power-off brake from the E22R to E600R range where the load must not drift while the machine is unpowered. A power-on brake is not a fail-safe holding brake and should not be specified as one.
The E46A engages in 8 ms and releases in 5 ms. That release is the fastest of any brake on the page, against 15 ms for the E50A, 40 ms for the E105A and 8 ms for the E300A, which makes it worth specifying for short-cycle indexing where throughput is limited by how quickly the axis is freed rather than how quickly it is caught.
At 0.1 kg it is the lightest brake in the Dunkermotoren range, below the 0.12 kg E38R and E50A. It measures 46 mm in diameter by 25.5 mm long. Where rotating mass or overall assembly weight is constrained, that matters more than the modest 0.3 Nm rating suggests.
The E46A runs on 24 Vdc drawing 0.26 A at 6.3 W nominal input power in the run-in condition.
The E46A is supplied with 500 mm grey AWG24 leads, the longest lead length of the power-on series, alongside no other model at 500 mm. Both conductors are grey, so check polarity against the drawing before terminating.
Dunkermotoren supplies the full power-on series, E46A, E50A, E105A, E300A and E605A, on request rather than as standard catalogue items, so lead times differ from the power-off range. Contact sales@powerbox.com.au for current availability before designing one in.
Selection depends on the torque required at the axis, whether the brake must hold on power loss or only when commanded, the motor series it mounts to, and whether an IP 65 profile-housing installation is needed. Send your motor model and duty details to sales@powerbox.com.au and Powerbox will confirm the right brake and mounting arrangement.
