Designing DC-UPS Systems with the compact Eltek MicroPack

24/07/25 James Rutty

When it comes to powering industrial control systems, process instrumentation, or remote monitoring assets, engineers are increasingly turning to compact, modular and smart DC power systems over traditional setups.

Among these, the Eltek MicroPack Power System stands out as a flexible, convection-cooled DC power platform ideal for small to medium industrial applications. Designed for DIN rail installation and based on telecom-grade architecture, the MicroPack offers industrial users a smarter, more resilient approach to 24Vdc and 48Vdc power supply.

At the heart of the system is the MicroPack Rectifier Series, a high-efficiency rectifier module that can operate either as a standalone DC power supply, a dedicated battery charger, or as part of a complete DC-UPS system. This versatility is enabled through its modular design and integration with Eltek’s Compack Controller.

In power supply mode, the MicroPack provides continuous, regulated DC output to field equipment such as PLCs, telemetry modules, or industrial Ethernet switches. When a battery bank is connected, it transitions into charger mode, supporting temperature-compensated charging, current limiting, and intelligent switchover during AC failure.

For applications requiring 12Vdc output, the MicroPack DC-DC Converter Module is available to step down from the 24Vdc or 48Vdc system voltage. This allows users to power legacy or low-voltage devices without adding a secondary power supply.

This makes the MicroPack ideal for standby and backup applications across a wide range of industrial sectors.

Key Features for Industrial Environments

  • Fanless Natural Convection Cooling

Designed for silent operation and long-term reliability in dusty, enclosed or vibration-prone spaces.
  • Smart Charging and Battery Management

Supports sealed lead-acid and lithium chemistries, with float and boost charging modes and configurable current limits.
  • Hot-Swappable Modules

Easily scalable and serviceable under load. Modules can be replaced or added without interrupting system operation.
  • Flexible Output Configuration

Systems can be customised to suit specific site requirements, with options for output polarity, DC load distribution breakers, battery-side isolation, and custom termination arrangements.
  • 12Vdc Support via DC-DC Converter

For installations requiring 12Vdc outputs, a dedicated DC-DC module is available to step down from 24Vdc or 48Vdc. This simplifies integration of legacy equipment and mixed-voltage loads.
  • Configurable N+1 Redundancy

For critical systems where uptime is paramount, additional MicroPack modules can be installed to provide N+1 redundancy. If one module fails, remaining units continue to support the full load without disruption.
  • DIN-Rail and Modular Distribution Options

Compact footprint with flexible mounting options. Compatible with AC input redundancy, DC load distribution, and inverter expansion.
  • Remote Monitoring

Integration with Compack Controller allows for real-time alarm reporting, load diagnostics, and Ethernet or SNMP-based remote access.

Common Use Cases

Powerbox supports a wide variety of industrial applications using the MicroPack system, including:

  • PLC and SCADA Systems

Providing 24Vdc with battery backup for programmable controllers, RTUs and I/O blocks. Ensures autonomy during grid faults or brownouts.
  • Remote Monitoring and Instrumentation

Supporting flow meters, pressure sensors, or weather monitoring nodes in remote or unmanned sites.
  • Utility and Rail Infrastructure

DC-UPS for secondary substations, rail signalling, or field control cabinets with a focus on fanless reliability and compact integration.
  • Industrial Networking and Gateways

48Vdc supply for powering PoE switches, media converters, and wireless access points. These systems are often used in security networks, IP surveillance, intercom systems, and building automation platforms. The MicroPack provides battery-backed runtime to ensure communication continuity during mains failure.

Smarter than a Basic DIN Charger

Traditional DIN-mounted battery chargers and panel mount power supplies are often installed without visibility into load status, battery condition, or system performance. The MicroPack changes that by bringing telecom-grade intelligence and modularity into industrial power applications. With the Compack controller platform, users can monitor system voltage, current, battery alarms, mains availability, and fault history, either locally or remotely over IP.

Powerbox also offers local design support and assembly services for prewired MicroPack systems, including AC breakers, DC distribution, batteries, and monitoring integration. Whether wall-mounted in a process control room or deployed inside a roadside enclosure, our solutions are tailored to each industrial project’s requirements.
